Danisha Elisme: CROWN ACT

Hi, my name is Danisha Elisme and my story begins with the realization of what natural hair truly means to me. My hair is not just a form of expression; it is simply my identity. It signifies much of my strength and resilience.

From a young age, I began to become aware of the subtle pressures to conform- the idea that my hair had to be tamed or “dealt with”. However, on this journey of self-acceptance, I’ve realized that hair is not something you just wear; it is a part of who you are. When I decided to fully embrace protective styles and wear them out with pride, it solidified a moment of transformation within. It hadn’t just boosted my confidence and self-esteem, but it made me feel whole and showed me that my hair is a direct reflection of my essence.

The intensity held within my hair and self-connection is why The CROWN Act is so important. Young Adults, like me, entering the workplace and students learning at institutions should not feel the societal pressure and consequences of wearing their hair that grows out of their head in these spaces.

It is our job as a society to make sure we are protected from any hair discrimination in the state of Florida. We hope to see progress within the Crown Act in the Florida Legislature so that impactful experiences can be shared and settled to end discriminatory behavior against natural hair and protective styles.
